Obituary

William Harrison LIAS, an old resident of Jackson county, and a highly respected citizen, died at his home in this city, Wednesday, April 16, 1902, aged about 64 years. The cause of his death was dropsy, although he had been a sufferer from asthma and heart trouble for a number of years. Mr. Lias was a Pennsylvanian by birth. He came to Iowa in 1857, settling in Jackson county, where he had since resided. Sept. 20, 1861, he enlisted in Company M, 2d Iowa cavalry, serving three years. He then re-enlisted and serving three years. He then re-enlisted and served till Sept. 19, 1865, when he was honorably discharged. Mr. Lias was married to Phebe E. Anderson, July 16, 1871, who survives him, together with three children – Mrs. Stella Hutchins, Miss Lillie Lias and a son, Harry – who feel keenly the loss of a kind husband and father. He was a member of the M. E. church, and a sincere Christian, and when in health took an active part in church work. The funeral was held from M. E. church Friday afternoon at 9 o’clock, Rev. Parsons conducting the services. Both the Masons and A. W. Drips post attended in a body and assisted in the last rites at the burial in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Charles BRADWAY, aged about fifty years, died at his home north of town Saturday morning, April 19, 1902. He leaves a wife and family to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent husband and father. The funeral was held at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at the Esgate school house.

Washington SIMPSON, an old and highly respected citizen, died at his home in this city Saturday evening, April 19, 1902. He was born in Philadelphia, Penn., May 23, 1829, and came to Iowa in 1851 locating in Otter Creek township, Jackson county. In 1857 he returned to Wiltonsburg, Penn., where he married Miss Diana E. Allshouse, returning to Iowa immediately after his marriage. To this union was born two children, Joseph A. and Ida M., who, with the wife and mother, remain to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent husband and father. He removed with his family to this city about twenty years ago and remained a resident until his transition on the evening above stated. He has been troubled with a weakness of the back for a number of years but was not in a dangerous condition until the last week. The funeral services was held at the house yesterday evening with interment at Zwingle today.
