Hon. Geo. C. Heberling died at the home of his son, Dwight Heberling, in Seattle, Wash., Wednesday, March 15th, 1911, aged 74 years. Born in Harrison county, Ohio, March 1838, he came to Van Buren township, Jackson county, Iowa, in 1854, where he followed farming until the war broke out. He enlisted in Co. A. 24th Iowa, and was wounded in the battle of Port Gibson, losing part of one ear. Honorably discharged in February, 1864, he returned and took up the practice of law at Sabula with John Hilsinger. He filled several local offices and was elected twice to serve in the Iowa legislature in 1871-74. Was chairman of the republican state committee for a time was also appointed and served as U. S. marshal and P. O. inspector for some years. He became dissatisfied with the policies of the republican party for a time and affiliated with the democrats.
He was married to Miss Mary Todd after the war and three children were born to them only one of which now survive, and that is Dwight with his family. The wife died some twelve years ago.
Deceased moved from Sabula about six years ago, and the remains will be forwarded to Sabula for interment.
