OBITUARY.

On Saturday evening, June 30, 1894, at the residence of Chas. and Samantha L. Patten, her grand-daughter, Mrs. Mary W. Gordon Fowler passed away from her earthly home to a home in heaven, leaving many children, grand-children and great-grand-children to mourn their loss.

Mary W. Gordon was born in Charles City county, Va, Nov 10, 1810. Born of Scotch parents and one of the oldest and most respected families of the old commonwealth. She had a fair education for the day in which she lived. She was a great reader and had a great memory. Could remember back in the old colonial days and could tell many amusing things in those days. She was raised and passed her girlhood on the plantation now known as the residence home of President Tyler, the picture of which can be seen in the book of Presidents. This being built by her father, Dunbar Gordan. Deceased was a devout Christian up to the day of her death a loving wife to the husband who preceded her, Oct. 8, 1861 a loving and kind mother to her children. Ready to lend a helping hand in time of sickness as many of her old neighbors will testify, and was truly reverenced by all who knew her best. Deceased has seen many trying times and gone through many hardships. Coming to a new country as she did, she was deprived of many of the comforts of life which she might have received had she remained with her people in her native state. Yet she bore these hardships with a Christian spirit and without a murmur.

She was married to Braxton Fowler of the same county and state, April 29, 1825. To them 14 children were born. Six daughters still live. One son was shot when quite young, the rest died in infancy with the exception of a son, W. L. Fowler, who died seven years ago
