Rev. Luther Holmes of Mommouth died in April, 1865, of congestion of the lungs, in his 70th year. He was the father of Rev. O.A.Holmes, one of the most successful pastors in Iowa for many years.

Born in Vermont, he removed first to New York where he was converted under the ministry of Father John Peck and united with the Baptist Church at New Woodstock, Madison County. He afterward moved to Ohio and about 1853 to Jackson County, Iowa. He had been in the ministry for about 16 years.
