Joseph Jackson Dies Suddenly Early Monday
Pioneer Resident Dies at Tilton Home; Interment in Mt. Hope Cemetery

Joseph Jackson, 78, was found dead in his bed at his home north of this city about 6:30 o’clock Monday morning, by his niece, Mrs. Dollie Tilton, with whom he made his home. Mrs. Jackson had been in failing health for some time and was confined to his home most of the time.

Joseph Jackson, better known to the people of Maquoketa and vicinity as “Josh,” was born January 9, 1853, at Davenport, Iowa, a son of Joseph and Jane Petch Jackson. He came with his parents to the farm north of town which has been his home for nearly all his life. After the death of his parents he continued to reside on the old homestead with his niece, Mrs. Dollie Tilton and family, the latter having tenderly cared for him during his last illness.

Mr. Jackson was the last member of his immediate family. He was never married and his nearest surviving relatives are five nieces, Mrs. Dollie Tilton, Mrs. Nettie Krumviede, Mrs. Beulah Stokesberry of Maquoketa, Mrs. Emroy Olm of Davenport and Mrs. Florence Schroeder of Bernard. His only sister, Mrs. Fannie Shattuck, died October 4, 1929.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at the Tilton home. Burial will be made in Mt. Hope cemetery.
