Jackson Sentinel, June 27, 1889:

DIED
ELLIS-At his home in South Fork Township, June 20, 1889, of chronic disease of the kidneys and bladder, Jessee Ellis, aged 80 years.

Deceased was born in Shelby County, Kentucky, on the 2d day of February, 1810, of revolutionary stock. His father, Joseph Ellis, joined the Continental Army at the age of 16 and thirty years later, with two sons, participated in the War of 1812, and served under Jackson at New Orleans.

Jesse Ellis was married to Ailsea Jeffers in 1838, in the state of Indiana, and in 1852 came to Iowa, and purchased the land on which he resided until his death. He leaves seven children, four sons and three daughters, his wife having preceded him in 1865. He was honest and respected by all who knew him. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Adams at the Hurstville school house, June 21st, and was attended by a large concourse of friends and neighbors who followed the remains to the Esgate cemetery, where they were laid to rest by the side of his wife.
