Jackson Sentinel, September 27, 1883:
Patrick Whalen-
On the 8th inst. Patrick Whalen and son were returning via the Garryowen Road from Dubuque to their home in Otter Creek Township. Pat was riding with his son on the wagon and leading a horse behind. The horse took fright and jerked Mr. Whalen on to the ground, injuring him so severely he died next day. The accident occurred in Butler Township, about three-quarters of a mile from the Brandon Township line. The deceased was 68 years old, having lived in Jackson County off and on for about 40 years, and was one of the highly respected old citizens of his township.
