Memorial For Alva Abrams Sunday, June 17.
Killed March 29 In Action On Luzon Island.
A memorial service will be held June 17th, at the Maquoketa First Methodist Church, at 2:30 p.m. for PFC Alva Dwaine Abrams, 20 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Abrams, who reside north of Maquoketa. PFC Abrams died March 29 as a result of wounds sustained in action on Luzon. The Rev. Harry D. Green will conduct the memorial service and Lester W. Romer, chaplain of Timber City Post No. 75, the American Legion, will present a memorial flag to PFC Abrams's mother on behalf of the President and the United States government.
Following the service in the church the firing squad of Timber City Post 75, the American Legion will retire to the lawn and give a salute to the dead followed by taps by the post bugler.
Born Sept. 22, 1924, in Maquoketa, PFC Abrams attended Jackson County rural schools before entering the service Sept. 25, 1943. He was stationed at Camp Fanum, Texas for five months and went overseas March, 1944. He has been awarded the Purple Heart.
He is survived by his parents, three brothers, George Ortell of Chicago, Illinois, Edward Ortell of Monroe, Louisiana, and John Abrams at home, and two sisters, Mrs. Clyde Lange of Lowden, Iowa, and Mrs. John Fisk, of Chicago. One brother preceded him in death.
