MAQUOKETA — Max M. Sommers, 78, of Maquoketa and formerly of Andrew, died Monday at the Jackson County Regional Health Center, Maquoketa.
Burial will be in the Andrew Cemetery.
He was born March 21, 1929, north of Andrew to Edmond “Jim” and Laura Goettler Sommers. He married Barbara Elaine Flint on Aug. 23, 1952, in Andrew. She died in 1993.
He was a 1946 graduate of Andrew High School.
He served in the U.S. Army Reserves.
He first worked with the Maquoketa Police Department as a patrolman. In 1954, he began a 24-year career with Andrew Savings Bank. He worked there until 1978 when he began Sommers Insurance Agency. He retired to Maquoketa in 1988.
He was an active member of the Andrew community for many years. He served on various committees, most notably as the mayor of Andrew and as Andrew fire chief. He was a member of the Andrew Fire Department for more than 20 years and former member of Maquoketa Masonic Helion Lodge 36 AF&AM. He also was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, Andrew, and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Club, Maquoketa, serving as past president.
Survivors include his children, Guy (Leanne) Sommers of Hills and Gregg (Tammy) Sommers of Andrew; one sister, Joyce “Toots” (Richard) Orr of Arab, Ala.; six grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Doris Sommers of Edgewood; two sisters-in-law, Karen Sommers of Maquoketa and Lois Sommers of Mesa, Ariz.; and one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Brenda (David) Boynton of Bettendorf.
A Max M. Sommers Memorial Fund has been established.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son, three brothers and one sister.
