Josephine Gurius, Pioneer Resident, Dies In Home.
Funeral services for one of Maquoketa's oldest citizens, Mrs. Josephine Gurius, 91, will be held Monday afternoon at two o'clock in the Haylock-O'Hara funeral home. The Rev. Bruce S. Dean, pastor of the First Congregational Church, will officiate and burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Mrs. Gurius died in her home here Thursday morning after a lingering illness. As Josephine Smola, she was born Sept. 14, 1861, in Fulton, Ill., the daughter of John and Josephine Sebetka Smola. She came to Jackson County when a small girl, and has reside here ever since. She was married Sept. 25, 1893, to Fred Gurius in Chicago. He preceded his wife in death.
She was a charter member of the Pope Rebekah lodge and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. A member of the Congregational Church, Mrs. Gurius belonged also to the Women's Relief Corps.
Survivors include two step-daughters, Mrs. Ann McPeak of Maquoketa and Mrs. Rose Cole of Minneapolis, Minn., and three step-sons, Edward Gurius of Maquoketa, Fred Gurius of Mitchell, So. Dak., and George Gurius of Bellevue. (Jackson Sentinel, January 16, 1953.)
