OBITUARY OF W. W. INGALLS
Walter W. Ingalls, the youngest child of Willard and Mary Ingalls was born in St. Lawrence county, New York, March 28, 1866. His parents came from New York and settled in Maquoketa in 1870.
He received his education in the Maquoketa schools and was a graduate of the high school class of 1883. After graduation he taught school at Cherry Grove near Iron Hill and the following year entered Epworth Seminary where he finished his education.
Very soon after finishing he was employed by A.S. Buterworth for a number of years and was later commissioned in the U.S. Railway Mail Service, and at this time married Miss Anna Smola, youngest daughter of John and Josephine Smola of Jackson county, Iowa.
They moved to Bellevue, Ia., and later to Dubuque, where he served his accepted service for 18 years.
To this happy union were born five children, John, Willard, Walter, Ethel and Laura. Walter preceded his father in death in August 1909.
In 1907, W.W., as he was affectionately known, retired from the service and with his family came back to Jackson county and settled on the farm six miles north of town where he has lived ever since.
Walter Ingalls was from a young man a leader and tireless worker in the organizations of labor and of late years he gave his best toward the advancement of the farmers conditions and the betterment of agricultural conditions of his community.
For the past few years he has been slowly failing in health and finally had to submit to hospitalization and passed away at Finley hospital, Dubuque, Ia., on Tuesday evening, Dec. 22, 1925, at the age of 59 years, 8 months and 25 days.
He was a member of the Masonic and M.W. of America and O.E.S. lodges.
Surviving relatives are the wife and four children, John of Aurora, Ia., Willard of Chicago, Ethel Robinson of Onslow and Laura at home, and one brother, F.B. Ingalls of Maquoketa.
