MAQUOKETA — Ross Davis, 87, of Maquoketa, died Tuesday at Mercy Hospital, Dubuque.

Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa, where full military rites will be conducted by Maquoketa American Legion Post 75, Maquoketa VFW Post 3633 O’Connor-Regenwether and Andrew AMVETS Post 62.

He was born on Dec. 22, 1918, in Maquoketa to Gene and Kathryn Ross Davis. He married Betty J. Gildersleeve Cherry on Jan. 24, 1959, in Geneseo, Ill.

He was a 1937 graduate of Maquoketa High School.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from August of 1941 until being honorably discharged in November of 1945. He served one year on the Alcan Highway in Alaska in 1943 and spent 1944 and 1945 in Europe.

He was a farmer. He also was a real estate broker. He and his wife owned Ross Davis Real Estate before retiring after 46 years. He also was a partner in Rosemere Development.

He was a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge, Maquoketa, and served as its secretary for 19 years. He was a member of Maquoketa VFW Post 3633 O’Connor-Regenwether, Maquoketa American Legion Post 75 and a 50-year member of the Maquoketa Country Club.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Scott Davis and John Davis, both of Maquoketa; one brother, George (Vivian) Davis of Lawton, Okla.; one sister, Mary Ellen (Richard) Bilsborrow of Seattle; one grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Hurstville Interpretive Center or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
