MAQUOKETA — Verlyn D. Rutenbeck, 83, of Maquoketa and formerly of Lost Nation, died Monday at Jackson County Regional Health Center, Maquoketa.

Burial will be in Elwood Cemetery.

He was born Aug. 4, 1923, in Clinton County to Albert and Alma Gohlman Rutenbeck. He married Dolores Dietz on Dec. 16, 1945, in Lost Nation.

He was a 1942 graduate of Elwood High School.

He served in World War II with the U.S. Navy.

He farmed in the Elwood area and then worked with Consumers Co-op, managed the Farmer’s Co-op in Lost Nation and Farmer’s Supply, Wheatland, before retiring.

He and his wife lived in the Elwood area for 10 years. They moved to Lost Nation in 1957 where they resided until moving to Maquoketa in 2005.

He was an active member of Union Presbyterian Church, Lost Nation. He also was a member of Lost Nation American Legion Menzo-Widel Post 381 and Oxford Junction Zelous Masonic Lodge 435.

Survivors include his wife; children, Sherillyn Rutenbeck of Buffalo, N.Y., Connie Rutenbeck of Phoenix and Steven (Nancy) Rutenbeck of Lost Nation; four grandchildren; and two brothers, Eldon (Laurabelle) Rutenbeck of Maquoketa and Duane Rutenbeck of Lost Nation.

A Verlyn D. Rutenbeck Memorial Fund has been established.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
