The proprietor of Canton being desirous to turn to a more profitable account than his own means enable him to do, the immense water power of the Maquoketa River at the town hereby calls the intention of Capitalists to the advantages of the location. Canton is situated partly in Jackson County and partly in Jones County, on the Maquoketa River, which at this point is of sufficient capacity to run fifty pair of burrs or other machinery requiring an equivalent amount of power; the bed and banks of this stream, at this point are of solid rock, affording such facilities for damming the river as are seldom found combined with other local advantages which this place presents.
