THE BRYAN DEFALCATION
The creditors of the estate of James A. Bryan of Jackson County, bankrupt, met yesterday at the office of D. B. Nash, register, to hold their third conference. L. A. Ellis, District Attorney, appeared on behalf of Jackson County, a claim of $50,000 having been filed against the estate. The ground of the claim was money embezzled from the county treasury of Jackson County, with the history of which all our readers are familiar. Also Chas. M. Dunbar, Esq., of Maquoketa, appeared as attorney for several creditors.
The assignee of the estate, T. E. Cannell, of Maquoketa, was present and submitted his final report in the case. The estate has now been disposed of and the proceeds divided among the creditors pro rata, Jackson County being greatly the largest creditor. The total liabilities were about $120,000. In December, 1874, there was a dividend of 18 per cent among the creditors and now there will be a second and last dividend of 10 per cent for them.
