BISHOP DEDICATES CHURCH

—The new Catholic church of Maquoketa was dedicated to the worship of the Almighty last Sunday, in accordance with the solemn and impressive services of that denomination, by the Right Rev. Bishop Hennessy, of Dubuque, assisted by Fathers Scanlan, of Dewitt, and Gaffney, of Otter Creek. A large number of persons were present from this city and surrounding country. The building was crowded to its utmost capacity, and still scores were unable to gain admittance. Bishop Hennessy delivered a lengthy address after the conclusion of the dedicatory ceremonies, the subject matter of which was the claims of the Roman church to the respect and bedience of the people. It was listened to with profound interest and attention. The edifice is the finest in the city, and Father Gaffney, who has been mainly instrumental in building it, has reason to be proud of his work. A special train from Dewitt brought up about one hundred of the people of that town to witness the ceremony. The day was one of the most beautiful that could have been imagined.
