Maquoketa Downtown Fire of 2008

A Maquoketa downtown fire on January 19, 2008, destroyed five buildings and damaged a sixth building. Approximately one-half of the east side of Main Street was leveled by the fire which originated in an upstairs apartment. The buildings lost were Sue’s Hallmark, Breitbach’s Floor Covering, Jackson County Home Furnishings, which occupied two buildings and Pickel Barrel Subs. The Main Street Plaza was damaged. It took over two years for the fire debris to be cleaned up.
