THE BELLEVUE LEADER
Official Paper of the County.
W.O. EVANS, Publisher.
Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1875THE BELLEVUE LEADER
Its Past, Present, and Future.
It is now a little more than two years since we assumed editorial control of this paper. We found it then a broken down, bankrupt and suspended concern, as destitute of patronage as it was of public favor or confidence. This state of affairs was no fault of the people, but the natural result of mismanagement, or lack of editorial ability and diligence on the part of its then publishers. We mounted the tripod, determined to bring success out of failure, if we had the principal power at command to do so. We have succeeded in what we then undertook even beyond our own most sanguine expectations, and today the Leader ranks among the leading global papers of the State, having a fame that is not hemmed in by the State limit. We do not take all this credit to ourself, as we have had many kind and generous friends, who have extended to us and our paper warm, substantial support and encouragement, for which we are truly grateful.
Our subscription list, now as large as that of most local papers, is constantly and rapidly increasing in numbers, so that before another year has numbered itself with the past, if we continue progressing onward and upward as we have during the past two years.
The Leader, in polities, will continue as it has been –a bold and fearless advocate and explorer of the principles of the Republican party so associated by the State and National Republican conventions. It will take an active and leading part in the great Presidential contest of 1876, and leave no stone unturned within its province to secure the election of its party votes.
In addition to the political contest in which the Leader will engage during the upcoming year, there will very likely be a County Seat fight in this county that will be the most noisy, yet bloodless strife on record. In this struggle we shall stoutly and persistly contend for the removal of the County Seat from Maquoketa so either Bellevue or Andrew, as the people of those two towns may elect. The coming year, considering all these things, will be an eventful one; so much so that none in the county can well afford to do without this Leader in such times of local and general excitement, when so much is at stake to be either lost or won by the contending parties in these several disputes. The best weapon a newspaper can have to engage in a controversy with, is a large paying patronage—a wide circulation, with which it can deal loud and effective blows on the ranks of the enemy. Then, we ask you, as a people, to lend us your aid and encouragement, by freely taking our paper and paying for it, and in return we will endeavor to advance your interests, and give you a good, outspoken, newsy paper besides.
