N. N. EMERSON-

N. N. Emerson, a former attorney at law in Maquoketa, but now following his profession in Rock Island, was in town Saturday and Sunday to visit old acquaintances. Since leaving Maquoketa, Mr. Emerson has had 18 months of lively experience as a volunteer in the war in the Phillipine Islands. He passed through ten active engagements and a whole lot of rabbit chasing, and evidently had to endure about as great hardships as any of the soldiers there. His regiment was in the wilds of southern Luzon most of the time. He saw the natives as they are before the enlightenment of civilization reaches them and he found places where white men had never been before in some of the regions penetrated by his company. However, when given a chance to learn, he observed that the Phillipinos improved rapidly. Mr. Emerson thinks the island may be worth the $20,000,000 paid for them, but not the tremendous cost of the war.
