George W. Doe Bequest

The announcement of the death of Walter Doe brings up to the Davenport Democrat the recollection of his son George W. Doe’s bequest to the Academy of Sciences in Davenport. The Democrat says: “Several years ago a man by the name of George W. Doe died in Maquoketa, his native place. He had been in ill health for several years and spent most of the time in traveling in Colorado, New Mexico, Montana, Nevada, Arizona and California for the benefit of his health. His father was wealthy and afforded him abundant means for travel. He was a student in geology and mineralogy and gathered many beautiful specimens in his tours to facilitate his studies. He organized a cabinet, labeling each specimen with its proper name and class and place obtained. He made a will, in which he bequeathed his cabinet to the Davenport Academy of Science; it was brought here, and is in the Academy today, a very valuable possession, the admiration of all students in science who view it. The name of George W. Doe will be treasured in the Academy as long as it exists.”
