"We were very much surprised and almost horrified, to learn of a cruel separation that took place last week In the vicinity of Cherry Grove. Yes, separated after 24 years of continual and peaceful association, through prosperity and adversity, cold and heat, storm and fair weather, they cast their lot together. And it was thought that this friendly tie could never be broken until the prime monster Death, claimed its own. But alas! How little we know of human nature. To-day there is vacant place in a good family where but a few short days ago, all was happiness and comfort. You ask who is it? What is it? Why keep us in suspense? We answer, although it costs us a great effort to say it, that uncle Eli Matheny has traded off his old dun horse 'Cealum.'" - 23 Aug 1888, Jackson Sentinel, Maquoketa, Iowa, pg 8.
