Maquoketa Business Man Weds Popular Des Moines Girl
“Well, we had it guessed out all right and the hint we threw out thru the Sentinel last week, was based on facts profound. Hon. A.L. Broxam deserted the ranks of single wretchedness Saturday, when he was united in marriage to one of Des Moines most popular ladies. In the Des Moines Register of Sunday the following announcement of the wedding appeared together with a large photo of the bride:
“Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Bennett of Great Falls, Mont., announce the marriage of their daughter, Pearl Harrington Bennett, to Mr. A.L. Broxam of Maquoketa, Ia., which took place yesterday in Chicago.
“The marriage, which took place at the home of the officiating clergyman, the Rev. G.A. Rapp, pastor of the First Methodist church, is of widespread interest, both Miss Bennett and Mr. Broxam being well known over Iowa.
“The bride is particularly well known in Des Moines, which has been her home for, five years and where she has been director of dramatics in both East and West high schools and Drake and Des Moines universities. She is a graduate of the University of Iowa and Northwestern School of Oratory, affiliating with the Kappa Kappa Gamma and, Zeta Phi Eta sororities. During the last year Miss Bennett conducted her own studio and just concluded a tour, in which she managed, directed and played the leading part in ‘The Bubble,’ which was presented by New York players.
“Mr. Broxam is well known in political circles, having served the state as senator from Jackson county during the Thirty-seventh general assembly. He is a graduate of the pharmacists department of Highland Park college and is engaged in the drug business in Maquoketa.
“Mr. and Mrs. Broxam will sail Nov. 1 from Los Angeles, Calif., and during their six months tour will visit Japan and South America, where Mr. Broxam will look after-business interests.
“Of course Al's many friends here are trailing the newlyweds up with congratulations, even tho he stole a march on most of them. He is one of our prominent business men and needs no introduction to the people of this city or country. He has served the city as a councilman, and as state senator labored hard in the legislature endeavoring to enact laws to further the interests of his community. That his bride stands high in social circles in the capital city is evidenced by the positions which she has held and the countless compliments accorded her by the people of her home city.
“The Sentinel wishes Mr. and Mrs. Broxam a long life of happiness, and a welcoming hand will be extended by legions of friends upon their arrival in the Timber City." – 4 Oct 1921, Jackson Sentinel, Maquoketa, Iowa, pg 1.
