Sabula Gazette, June 2, 1883, reprinted in the Jackson Sentinel, June 7, 1883.

Notorious Charles Davis.

While taking a look through the penitentiary at Anamosa on Wednesday Mr. S. E. Day met the notorious Charles Davis, who will be remembered in this city as having been implicated in the Burgess murder on Eldredge Island. Davis informed S. E. that he was in the pen on a seven years’ sentence for robbing an old lady at Clinton. He has served seventeen months of the time and now has the appearance of going into consumption, so that he will probably never regain his liberty. It is generally believed among those having the most knowledge of the affair that it was Davis instead of Morff who did the stabbing in the fatal affray at this place.
