POSTPONEMENT OF EXECUTION
Upon the urgent solicitation of C. M. Dunbar, Esq., one of the counsel of Samuel P. Watkins, Governor Merrill has granted a respite of his execution until the 10th day of October, next. This is as it should be. It is to be hoped that upon the trial of his confederates Bucklin and Nelson, sufficient evidence will be adduced to relieve the unfortunate young man from suffering the extreme penalty of the law. An impartial jury has by verdict found him guilty, yet no one should clamor for the speedy consummation of his execution, but all possible avenues should be left open in the hope that something favorable to him may developed in the trial of his confederates.
