Dubuque Weekly Times, September 12, 1861.

Alvin Moss killed in train crash at Wheatland.

An accident happened last week on Thursday on the Clinton and Cedar Rapids Road. It seems that while the mail train was going west, as it approached Wheatland there was occasion to take two platform cars in advance of the engine, and to push them up to a side track where they could be switched off. While the train was running in this manner, at usual speed, it struck a young steer which threw the two platform cars, together with the locomotive off the track. A man named Alvin Moss of Maquoketa, in the employ of the company, was standing on the forward car. He was thrown with violence to the ground and killed instantly. John F. Tuck, the engineer was scalded severely, and has since died. The brakeman, Mr. Fulson, was badly bruised. The fireman jumped from the engine and escaped unhurt. No passenger was injured.
