December 6, 2001Police appeal for hunter help in May case
Authorities urge deer hunters to report any unusual or suspicious findings this weekend
By Lowell CarlsonAlmost a year after Greg May simply vanished into thin air, local and state law enforcement officials continue to seek clues and information from the public on this Bellevue man who disappeared in mid-January.
Bellevue Police Chief Lynn Schwager renewed the plea for help from the public this week with an appeal for deer hunters to keep a sharp eye out this coming weekend.
The second shotgun deer season will see hundreds of orange-clad hunters fan out into wooded tracts off the beaten path.
Schwager urged hunters to be especially watchful for anything suspicious noting family members have pledged a $10,000 reward for finding May or his remains.
Even though officially Greg May’s disappearance from Bellevue in mid-January remains a missing person case, foul play has never been ruled out. Several exhaustive searches were organized along the Mississippi from Bellevue south to Sabula. Both produced no trace of the rare Civil War artifacts dealer.
In late October May’s children, Don and Shannon May, Los Angeles, Calif., announced at a Bellevue news conference they were offering the reward in effort to find some trace of their father.
Schwager said it is not uncommon for persons to attempt to conceal human remains by wrapping them in blankets or plastic bags. The police chief said the contents are many times bound by duct tape.
The Bellevue police chief urged hunters and the public at large to report anything suspicious to his office or to the Iowa DCI at the above phone numbers.
He urged caution not to disturb any findings, or the immediate area, if a discovery is made in the coming days of the deer season. It remains the largest possible search party available to the investigation.
