Bellevue Leader, October 3, 1891, reprinted in the Jackson Sentinel, October 15, 1891.
Over forty murders have been committed in Jackson county since 1840, and the most of them cold blooded and brutal enough, yet only one legal hanging has taken place, and that transpired upwards of 49 years ago. Is it any wonder that mob violence and Judge Lynch take a hand occasionally to mete out justice-something the courts of this country are not remarkable for doing in their disposition of murder cases.
