CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF DUBUQUE,
Rev. M. M. Hoffmann, 1938SACRED HEART CHURCH, GREEN ISLAND
This parish consists of eighteen families and is attended from St. Peter’s, Sabula. The present church was built in 1875 by Father Schiffmacher, the parish priest of Bellevue at that time. Both Green Island and Sabula were attended from the Bellevue parish at that distant date.
The land for the church was given by James Clarke, a brother of Mother Clarke. Mass was celebrated in the homes of James Clarke, George Hoy, and Frank Dittoe, before the building of the church. The altar, organ and some of the memorial windows were donated by the Hoy family.
The oldest baptismal record of Sacred Heart Church, in the register at St. Peter’s Sabula, is that of Mary Alberta Cavanaugh, May 1, 1882. The pastor at that time was Father James F. Corbett. The pastors of Green Island since that time have been the same as those of St. Peter’s, Sabula.
The present pastor is Father Stephen J. Tushak.
