Maquoketa Weekly Excelsior
August 28, 1873The “Rev.” Beast.
Many of our readers have already heard of the revelations of the almost incredible baseness and beastliness of Rev. J. M. Schueller, of the Orphan Asylum at Andrew. The Dubuque Herald published the first news of the affair in print, which was immediately telegraphed to and given circulation in the Chicago papers. The Andrew Picket follows with its own and the Herald’s statements, the Maquoketa EXCELSIOR barely refers to it, and the Sentinel has not a word upon the matter. We commend the course of the Picket, which, while denouncing Schueller, considerately omits the names of his little victims. – Lyons Mirror.
The Dubuque Herald, being a daily, had the opportunity of giving an account of the Andrew crime in advance of weekly publications. The Picket gave very many more of the details of it than the EXCELSIOR, while the Sentinel, as usual, awaits the verdict of public opinion, and will act accordingly. It never advances. We do not think the details of disgusting and horrible crimes are proper matter for family newspapers. Hence we do not fill our paper with such things. The Mirror may differ with us in this opinion.
