Golden Wedding.

In the year 1800 Eliza Johnson was born, in the state of New Hampshire, and in the year 1801 Aaron Truax saw light in the Dominion of Canada. On the 8th of June, 1823, at Dunham, Canada East, Aaron and Eliza were married, and twenty-four years since they came to Maquoketa to find a home. They found a pleasant one. Last Monday evening was the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding, and their children and friends gave an agreeable surprise by going in a great body, filling the house and making some nice presents. Between seventy-five and one hundred were present, and a pleasant evening was spent. Five children are living to bless the aged couple, four of whom, with fourteen grand children and one great grand child, were present. An elegant cane for the old father, a heavy pair of gold bowed spectacles and a beautiful breast pin for the still older mother, and other appropriate gifts, were with proper ceremonies presented by the children, after which the choicest viands were served. Such gatherings are uncommon everywhere, and especially in the young west, where by few except the young come, and they haven’t had time, amid the rush of events and developments of the country, to grow old. It must be worth a lifetime of labor and care to an aged couple to witness, just as life is finally closing, such a scene as greeted Mr. and Mrs. Truax Monday evening; to see gathered around them in happy reunion three generations of descendants; to know that their children and children’s children rise up to call them blessed. We believe the memories of that evening will lighten many burdens and sweeten many reflections for the aged pair who were honored with a “Golden Wedding” June 8th, 1873
