Bellevue Herald, January 15, 1885, re-printed in Jackson Sentinel, January 24, 1885.

Last Tuesday evening while driving out of town on his way home , John Portz, who lives west of Springbrook, was nearly killed. When near the brewery a portion of the harness gave way, letting the tongue drop down and frightening the team, which plunged down the hill throwing the wagon to the side of the road and pitching Mr. Portz out on his head. He was picked up unconscious, conveyed to the brewery office and Dr. Dennison summoned. The doctor found that he had sustained concussion of the brain and a number of very bad bruises. He was removed to the home of his father-in-law, Nick Homan, where he has been lying in a semi-conscious condition ever since, with the chances about even for his recovery.
