ANSEL BRIGGS PORTRAIT

The last General Assembly appropriated $125 to pay for painting th portrait, to be placed in the State Capitol, of Iowa's first Governor, Hon. Ansel Briggs, late of Andrew, this county, but at present resident of Council Bluffs. The Clinton Age suggests a sum of money be raised by subscription in this part of the State to pay the expense of sending the Ex Governor to the Centennial Exhibition, the old gentlemen being poor. It is not probable that Mr. Briggs would consent to such an arrangement. Even if he has been Governor, he may have some pride left.
