Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Smith Married 65 Years Monday. They Have Ten Living Children.Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Smith residing on their fine farm two miles east of this city celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary Monday, surrounded by a number of their relatives and friends.
James Carter Smith was born in Mercer county, Pa., Nov. 10, 1837, and when fifteen years of age came with an aunt and uncle to Jackson county to reside. Amanda E. Fowler was born in Lawrence county, Ohio, Sept. 5, 1843, and when six months old, her parents moved to Jackson county and located on a farm near Union Center, where she grew to womanhood. She made the acquaintance of J. C. Smith and they were happily married March 2, 1859, at DeWitt, Iowa. They went to housekeeping on a farm near Union Center, where they lived until the war broke out, when Mr. Smith answering to his country’s call, enlisted in Company I, 24th Iowa. At the battle of Champion Hill, May 16, 1863, Mr. Smith suffered the loss of a limb from a bullet wound and was honorably discharged after being confined in a hospital for several months. After the war closed he bought the farm two miles east of town and said farm has been their home for more than 45 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith were blessed with eleven children, one dying in infancy. Those surviving are” Mrs. Samantha Patten of Pierre, S. D. Ross Smith of Jamestown, N. D., Ulysses G. Smith of Seattle, Wash, Garden C. of Garretson, S. D. Etta G. and Elmer E. at home; Ethel L. Sterns of Dolphin, Canada, Louis O. Smith of Durant, Iowa, Albert Lee of Wilmer, Minn.; and Mrs. Lottie L. Hancock of Hettinger, N. D.
