Iowa State Gazetteer – Jackson Co. (1865)

MAQUOKETA is on the Maquoketa River, in the southern part of the county. It has three churches, Baptist, Congregational and Methodist Episcopal; and one Lodge each of Masons and Odd Fellows; also two drug stores, six general stores, three groceries, two hardware stores, two saw mills, three flour mills, two woolen factories and one National bank. The Maquoketa Excelsior is published by Col. J. J. Woods and Wilbur F. McCarron, also the Jackson County Sentinel by Gilbert W. Hunt. Population, 2,000.

BELLEVUE is situated on the Mississippi River, 22 miles below DuBuque, and 12 miles from Galena, Illinois. The town site is upon a plateau of land about fifteen feet above high water mark, and is surrounded by an amphitheater of hills which break off the severe cold of winter. The town was first settled in 1836, by J. D. Bell. It has five churches, viz.: Congregational, Episcopal, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Roman Catholic; one Lodge of Masons, and one newspaper – the Union Banner, weekly, S. D. Helms, Editor and proprietor. It contains two flour mills, one saw mill, one iron foundry, nine general stores, six grocery stores, two drug stores and two breweries. There is good water power as yet undeveloped. Population, 1,400.

ANDREW is the county seat, and is on the stage route from DuBuque to Davenport, 25 miles from the former, and 50 miles from the latter place.

It contains three churches, Methodist, Presbyterian and United Presbyterian; also four general stores, one saw mill and two flouring mills. Population, 300.

SABULA is in the southeast corner of the county, on the Mississippi River. It contains two churches, five general stores, two groceries, two drug stores and three grain warehouses. Population, 1,000.

WATERFORD is in the southwestern portion of the county, in South Fork township. It contains five churches, Baptist, Christian, Methodist, New Jerusalem and United Brethren. It has two general stores, one drug store, three flour mills, two saw mills and one woolen factory. Population, 517; of township, 1,578.

CANTON is the western portion of the county, on the Maquoketa River, 28 miles southwest of DuBuque. It has two churches, Methodist and Presbyterian; also three general stores, one drug store, one grocery store and one flour and saw mill.

The water power at this point is very fine, being capable of driving a vast amount of machinery. Population, 250.

FULTON is situated in the central portion of the county, on the Maquoketa River, 30 miles south of DuBuque. It contains a Christian Church, one general store, one flouring mill and two saw mills. Population, 200.

LA MOTTE is in the northeastern portion of the county, 16 miles south of DuBuque. It has two churches, Baptist and Methodist, one general store and one flour mill. Population, 200.

OZARK is on the north fork of the Maquoketa River, 18 miles west of Andrew. It contains two churches, Methodist and Presbyterian; also one woolen factory and carding machine, one flour mill, one saw mill and one general store. There are excellent stone quarries in the immediate vicinity. Lead has been found, but no mines have yet been worked. The township is heavily timbered, and the soil is good. Population, 100.

OTTER CREK is in a township of the same name, in the northwestern portion of the county. It has two churches, Methodist Episcopal and Roman Catholic; also two general stores, one distillery, two flour mills and one saw mill. Population of township, 709.

STERLING is a post village, 30 miles southeast of Andrew. It has one Congregational Church, and one general store. Population, 100.

MONMOUTH is situated in the western part of the county, 26 miles east of Anamosa, on the DuBuque Southwestern Railroad. It has three churches, Baptist, Methodist and United Brethren; also one general store and one jeweler. Population, 150. VAN BUREN is in a township of the same name, in the southeastern part of the county. It contains a Baptist Church, and two general stores.

MILL ROCK is in the southwestern corner of the county, ten miles west of Maquoketa. It has one saw and flour mill, and one general store. Population, 75.

WICKLIFFE is on the Maquoketa River, 14 miles east of Andrew, and 2 ½ miles west of the Mississippi River. It has one general store, one flour mill and two saw mills.

SPRING BROOK is in the eastern part of the county, 10 miles southeast of Jackson, and three miles from the Mississippi River. It contains two churches, Baptist and Methodist, one general store, one flour mill and one saw mill. Population of township, 500.

MOUNT ALGOR is a post office, in Iowa township, 16 miles east of Andrew, and seven miles west of Sabula. It has two churches, Christian and Methodist.

COTTONVILLE is in Richland township, in the northern part of the county. It has one general store.

GARRY OWEN is in Butler township, in the northwestern part of the county. It has one general store.

SAINT DONATUS is a small post village, and contains one general store.

ZWINGLE is a small village which contains two general stores, one grocery, cabinet and blacksmith shops, etc.

UNION CENTRE, a post office in the southern portion of the county, 8 miles from Andrew.

The remaining villages and post offices are, Bridgeport, on the Maquoketa River, Emeline, Iron Hills, Rolley, Spragueville and Spruce Mills.
