Title: The Assault upon John Turner Results Fatally.

Information has reached the city that John Turner who was so brutally assaulted in Garryowens, a week ago Sunday night has died from the effects of the injuries received yesterday morning.

So far as we can learn, the authorities of Jackson County have made no effort whatever to discover or bring to justice the perpetrators of the crime, and they appear to treat the matter as if the taking of a human life were of no consequence whatever.

Somebody has committed this murder, there is a way to ascertain who the murderers are, and it is for the Sheriff of Jackson County to make use of that way as speedily as possible. The best way to repress crimes of such a character, as this is to make an example that ill not soon be forgotten of those that are guilty of them. Whoever the homicides are, they have a terrible load upon their conscience, and Cain-like, wherever they may go, the hand of man will be turned against them. -- Dubuque Telegraph

The Sheriff of this county does not act but has appointed a Deputy who is on duty about half the time. The other half is confined to his bed, being almost a confirmed invalid. This Deputy deputizes deputies, and we don’t know but what the sub deputies are appointing sub-sub deputies. It is no wonder, the people are complaining all over the county at such dereliction, and have fully made-up their minds not to be hood wink another two years. -- Bellevue, Iowa News Paper
