Maquoketa Excelsior, May 4, 1865:

FUNERAL OBSEQUIES OF PRESIDENT LINCOLN AS OBSERVED IN MAQUOKETA.

The demonstration on Thursday by the people of Maquoketa and vicinity, in accordance with the Governor's proclamation, was designed to be of the grandest order. Bad weather only prevented the programme from being carried out in full, but in view of that as a probability, steps had been taken to occupy the several churches, and to have an oration delivered in some one of them. Accordingly on Wednesday evening the Mayor issued his proclamation requesting that all business houses and saloons remain closed during the entire day, which was universally observed. All business houses were draped, and private dwellings wore over their doors and windows rich habiliments of mourning. With this dark apparel the very elements seemed to unite in ushering upon us a gloom appropriate to the occasion. At 11 o'clock A.M. the people began to assemble at the M.E. Church, where an immense congregation was edified by a discourse from the Rev. E.K. Young. Mr. Young is a minister who believes in preaching the "whole gospel," and on this occasion his fine ability for portraying was beautifully applied.
