Jackson Sentinel, October 13, 1898:
For the remaining several weeks of pleasant weather, the steamer Viola, Capt. Jess Patterson commanding, will make daily trips from Bridgeport to Barnes' Bluff, leaving the bridge at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Parties wishing to enjoy the trip can make advance arrangements by telephoning John Tubbs at the electric plant. Teams cared for at Bridgeport. Bus fare 25 cents, Maquoketa to Bridgeport and return, where there are four or more.
