Maquoketa Record, Sept. 19, 1906:
The retail merchants of Jackson County have organize to protect themselves against the mail order houses. J. A. Wright of this city is president of the organization and A. W. Webber of Bellevue, secretary. The object is to fight the parcels post law and kindred schemes being worked for the benefit of the big city concerns. The Record believes that the only way to fight those houses is to buy and sell for cash, and advertise bargains, even as those houses advertise in the newspaper, by circulars and every other means that will bring to the customers a knowledge that home merchants can do as well or better by him than the forgeign concern.
