CELEBRATE GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
About sixty relatives and friends gathered at the American Legion hall Monday afternooon, March 8, to help Mr. and Mrs. Chris Nissen Sr., celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. The afternoon hours were spent in pleasant reminiscences and a most bountiful dinner was served at six o'clock. Following the dinner, the evening hours were spent in cards and dancing.
Mr. Nissen was born Feb. 9, 1852, at Korlem, North Schleswig, Germany and came to this country on Nov. 13, 1872, and settled at Goose Lake, Iowa.
Mrs. Nissen was born April 16, 1857 at Archtrup, North Schleswig, Germany, and came to America June 1, 1873, and settled at Teeds Grove.
They were united in marriage March 8, 1876, at Maquoketa and resided on a farm near Codfish for many years.
Nearly all the years since their arrival in this country have been spent in Clinton and Jackson counties where Mr. Nissen practiced farming and was one of the most successful farmers in the vicinity. About 10 years ago they moved to Maquoketa where they have been very happy in the enjoyment of extra good health for people of their advanced age, and in the pleasure of the friendships they have made.
They were the happy parents of thirteen children, nine of whom are still living and are as follows: Pete, who resides at Andrew; Ed of Elwood, John of Emeline, Chris Jr. of Yankton, S.D.; Mrs. Milton Sagers of this city, Ferdinand of Owatonna, Minn.; Mrs. John Jones, Maquoketa; Volquart of Fairbault, Minn., and Herman who resides on a farm north of town. The children were all present for this happy reunion except Chris Jr., and Ferdinand.
