John W. Scarborough who is numbered among the younger farmers of Iowa Township, has been closely identified with the interests of this county since his birth, which took place in Iowa Township Aug. 18, 1855. He has consequently been known to the people of this region from boyhood and has had a life-long experience in agricultural pursuits. He owns a good farm of 120 acres on section 21 upon which he settled in February, 1882, and where he has prosecuted agriculture very successfully, making a specialty of stock-raising. He is one of the prominent men of his township and aids in looking after its interests, having served as Trustee for the last three years and holding other positions of trust in the community.
Our subject is the son of George and Jane (Barker) Scarborough, natives of England. They were reared and educated in their native England where also their marriage took place, and about 1839 the father brought his family to the United States, coming to Iowa and settling in Iowa Township, this county. He secured a tract of land where he followed farming until his decease which took place in 1880; the mother is still living at the old homestead. They were the parents of twelve children nine of whom survive, namely: Mary, Rose, Elizabeth, Sarah, Harriet, John, Phebe, George and Douglas. These are mostly located in Iowa Township. Mr. Scarborough remained a member of the parental household until nearly twenty-six years of age, then having in view the establishment of a home of his own, was married March 17, 1880, to Miss Belle Mateva. This lady was born Oct. 23, 1856, in Bellevue, and is the daughter of Charles and Rosana (Brothers) Mateva, who were natives of France. The father is deceased. The household of Mr. and Mrs. Scarborough now includes three bright children - Ivy B., born Jan. 13, 1881; Lou, Nov. 27, 1885, and Goldie M., Oct 25, 1887. Mr. Scarborough, politically, is an uncompromising Democrat, and his estimable wife belongs to the Methodist Episcopal Church at Sterling.
