James Raymond Sokol
James "Ray" Sokol was appointed assistant manager of the Penney store in Maquoketa. He is the son of Mayor A. W. Sokol. He joined the Penney staff in March of this year following his separation from the navy. Sokol contributed three years to the armed forces, 18 months of which was as a radio operator on Admiral Joy's flagship, the U. S. S. Francisco, in the South Pacific theater of operations.
Sokol was awarded five bronze battle stars for participation in as many campaigns and the Presidential Unit Citation badge. He is married and has one daughter, Janet Rae, who was a year old before she saw her father. His wife is the former Lois Wing of Maquoketa.
