LEWIS CARMAN, farmer, Secs. 22 and 23; P.O. Sabula; was born in New Brunswick, N.J., in 1808; he entered Rutger's College in 1825; completed the Junior year; his health failing, he left college and began the study of medicine, but poor health compelled him to discontinue this study; he was then engaged in the lumber business for several years at different places; first at New Brunswick, N.J., there in the State of New York at Angelica; he then returned to New Jersey. Was married, in 1831, to Miss Juliaette Smith, of New York City; they came to Sabula in September, 1842, where they lived two years, then located where they now live, three miles west of Sabula; they have had six children, three of whom are living - Mrs. Kate Louisa Miller, Maria J. Miller and Charles P.; their first child, Simeon, died in infancy; William died Dec. 25, 1862, aged 25 years; Louis A., born November, 1842, enlisted in 1862, in Co. A, 24th I.V.I.; he was mortally wounded at the battle of Winchester, 1864; he died Nov. 14 of that year. - 1879 History of Jackson County Iowa, Pg 703.
