Herald-Leader Bellevue
April 6, 1978First Woman to Seek Post
Marshalline Lamborn of Maquoketa has announced that she will seek the Republican nomination for Jackson county Supervisor, district two. Although an increasing number of Iowa counties have elected women as Supervisors in recent years, she becomes the first woman to seek the office in Jackson County.
Mrs. Lamborn anticipates being opposed in the primary by Roy Frandsen, who has already announced, and by Rodger Schnoor. The only announced Democratic candidate to date is Al Ehl, the incumbent. The entire county votes on all Supervisor races.
In making her announcement Mrs. Lamborn pointed out that the old-fashioned concept of the Supervisor duties was that it dealt mainly with the maintenance of county roads, and that a woman would not be well enough acquainted with this important aspect.
However, she viewed supervision of the road work as one of general administration and that it constitutes only a small portion of the Supervisor’s responsibilities. And in any case, she added, she has worked closely with her husband, Clif Lamborn, in their 25 years of construction business that has involved in large part the building of streets, roads and other surfaced areas.
In politics Mrs. Lamborn has served as Jackson county committeewoman and Jackson county chairman of the Republican party. She has also served as Second district chairman of the Republican women. She is a member of the Methodist church, the Maquoketa Women’s Club, is treasurer of the Jackson county Historical Society and is a board member of both the Terrace Hill Society and the Jackson County Taxpayers Assn.
Prior to the opening of their Lamborn Construction firm 25 years ago, Mrs. Lamborn had served in the office of the Jackson county Treasurer, in the County Engineer’s office and in an Iowa Highway Commission office.
In making the decision, she related that she had thought it over for a long time and felt she is as well qualified as any man. She hopes that the party organization can stay neutral in what is likely to be a three candidate primary race, and that the winner will emerge stronger for the general election campaign because of it.
She cited her general philosophy as making better use of the property tax money that we are already collecting rather than adding any increases. With regard to the staff in the various offices in the courthouse, she favors a freeze on hiring until an evaluation can be made of the actual needs.
She would favor analyzing just how the county’s share of state-federal revenue sharing has been spent over the past several years, and how it should be spent in the near future, assuming a continuance. She cited it was important that the county not get obligated in continuing programs that might become too expensive for the county to shoulder alone if revenue sharing were cut.
