Weis, Thillman *
Weis, Peter – Oberweis, Madelaine *The families that we are researching are some of the descendants of Thillman Weis, who was born Jan 12, 1757 in Berbourg, Manternach, Luxembourg. Thillman married Anna Marie Hostert on May 27, 1793 in Bishop’s Chapel, Trier, Germany, which is right next to the border with Luxembourg. She was the daughter of Theodore Hostert and Barbara Clausen. Thillman and Anna Marie had the following children, all born in Berbourg, Luxembourg:
Weis, Johann – Weber, Anna Marie
Johann (Jean) Weis was born November 12, 1795 in Berbourg, Luxembourg and married Anna Maria Weber. Anna Marie was born June 2, 1799, the daughter of Nicolas Weber and Clara Hansen from Berbourg. Johann was a linen weaver. Their children were Johann, Bernard, Anne, Helene and Barbe. This family remained in Luxembourg. We have made contact with Nico Weis, noted in acknowledgements, who is a descendant of this family and is now living in Luxembourg. Nico and his mother were researching the Weis family in Berbourg and discovered that Gaston and Helene Weis had a key to the family history. Jane M. Miller had sent The Weis Family volumes to Berbourg to Gaston and Helene Weis in as a thank you for helping her out with some addresses, pictures and census information.
Nico thought his family was the last of the Weis family from the Thillman Weis line. He did not realize that part of the family came to America. The chain of relationship goes from Nico to his father Joseph, to Nicholas, to Johann, to Johann and back to Thillman. We are very fortunate that he made contact with Jane M. Miller and Lorraine Weis Houghton, so that we could learn a lot more about each other’s family. Nico Weis can be contacted at Weis Nico, Millebaach 12, L- 4878 Lamadelaine, Luxembourg – Europe or email - weisnico@pt.lu.
Weis, Theodorus – Rivers, Margaretha
Theodorus (Theodore)Weis was born January 1, 1797 in Berbourg, Luxembourg and died about 1854 in Jackson County, Iowa. He married Margaretha (Margaret) Rivers October 12, 1815 in Berbourg. She died about 1838 when their youngest son, John, was about 18 months old. Theodore came to America with his son, Michael Weis, (Michel Weiss) and several family members in 1853. See Michael Weis below for more information on Theodore’s immigration. In the church records from Saint Donatus, this family was recorded as Weiss.
They made their way direct to Galena, Illinois, but after about a year spent in that city they came to Bellevue, Iowa. Theodore is buried in the St. Nicholas Catholic Cemetery north of Bellevue, Iowa. (See Part 4 for more on Theodore’s family)
Weis, Francois – Oberweis, Gertrude
Francois (Francis) Weis was born November 20, 1797. In Luxembourg he was called "Frantz". He died Dec 04, 1861. He married Gertrude Oberweis on Nov 21, 1821 in Berbourg, and his occupation is listed as a tailor. Gertrude is the daughter of Mathias Oberweis and Margaretha Weber. She was born December 16, 1797. Both Francois and Gertrude were born and died in Berbourg, Luxembourg. The raised their family in a home at 23 Duerfstrooss, L-6830, Burbourg, Luxembourg, knows as "Schneidesch" which means "tailors’s house".(See Part 5 for more on Francois’ family)

Nicholas Weis was born Mar 12, 1798 in Berbourg, Luxembourg. He married Elisabeth "Elise" Ney on November 20, 1821 in Berbourg and the records show his occupation as mason. Elisabeth is the daughter of Joannis Ney and Anna Maria Prommenschenkel. Their children were John, Catherine and Barbe. As far as we know, this family did not come to America.
Weis, Thillman
Thillman Weis was born about January 03, 1802 in Berbourg, Luxembourg. I have not found any marriage records on Thillman, and he is not listed in the 1843 census from Berbourg, obtained by Jane M. Miller.
