Maquoketa Sentinel, July 31, 1856.

J. K. Hershberger

Keep it before the People-That the German, J. K. Hershberger, the Republican candidate for Representative, was High Priest of the Know-Nothing Lodge in the Western part of this county-was opposed to foreigners voting, was opposed to religious liberty, opposed to his countrymen enjoying the rights bequeathed to us by the blood of our sires. He asks you, foreign born citizens for your votes. Show him that you rebuke all such selfish views by electing a man who is for the whole people.

1856 election results for State Representative:
J. K. Hershberger-1041
Ira Simpson- 950
