David Lawrence Rosheim (11/22/1944- )

Born in Albert Lea MN. All Norwegian (Nordic) ancestry. My parents were Irving and Vivien Rosheim (Dad was in USAAF in WWII). Parents (both still living) divorced and remarried. I am consequently the eldest of 15 siblings. I was raised by my grandparents, Dr. & Mrs K.I. Rosheim in Lake Mills and Decorah IA. I attended Luther College and graduated in May of 1966. I spent one year at Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul and one year as a graduate student at the University of IA, IA City and also was an active member of the SDS from 1967-69. Starting in 1970 I was a conscientious objector and worked two years in fulfillment of my alternate (non-military) obligation in MPLS, MN. I met Roberta Rolland at Luther College while taking educational psychology classes the second semester of the 1968-69 school year. We were married in Bode IA 8/20/1972 and approach our 37th wedding anniversary.

I began to write while at Luther. I was at first a poet and was also literary editor of the Luther student newspaper. Also an announcer on KWLC the radio voice of Luther College. I began to write history in 1972 and have written a variety of books over the years. I will attach a bibliography. We worked in MPLS where Roberta took classes at the University of Minnesota. I had a job with a film development company as a route driver after completing my hospital work. We moved back to Iowa in the fall of 1974 and lived in Rock Rapids and Boyden IA. Roberta taught special education classes in Boyden while I had several jobs, one of them was with the Area Education Agency which was located in Sheldon IA. Roberta got her MA from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion SD. We moved to Maquoketa IA in 1976 where she teaches special education and where I began my book business in November of 1976. It was called The Andromeda Book Shop and I also had a store in Bellevue IA for awhile. I have always dealt in a general stock of used and rare books with an emphasis on history and also religion/philosophy. In 1985 I ceased to have an open shop and did book fairs. In 1987 I ceased bookselling to concentrate on building up collections in different areas and also to concentrate on writing and historical research. In this period I wrote a number of columns which appeared in the Des Moines Register. In November of 1992 I resumed bookselling but did not again have an open shop except to have a space in the Banowetz Antique Mall starting in 1995. I also began to attend the Midwest Bookhunter’s Book Fair in St. Paul every July. I also began to travel extensively to build up my stock including buying trips to London and Berlin. My location was helpful since I am equidistant from Des Moines and Chicago. I do bookfairs, have an active online business with 20,000 books listed and continue with an expanded presence at the mall. I have three large storage units where I keep my books and make attempts to weed out my stock every so often of necessity. Probably 50,000 books in all. I do business now as Timber City Books, Used & Rare.

I also continue my imprint, The Andromeda Press. My latest project for this is the trilogy Broken Liturgy, a work of semiautobiographical fiction taking place in the 1960’s.
