Sabula Gazette, November 25, 1876.
Last Wednesday, James Clark, of Green Island, tried to kill himself by cutting his throat with a razor. He had for some time been despondent over pecuniary losses sustained in behalf of his son in an effort to make a losing business profitable, and it is said had drank somewhat freely. The attempt to take his life was made in a bedroom of his house, and would have been successful but for the interference of his wife, who suspected his design, but was not quick enough to prevent him inflicting an unsightly gash in his throat, which fortunately severed neither jugular vein nor windpipe and slashing his arm frightfully. Mr. Clark has lived in Jackson county for nearly 40 years, and during that time has occupied many official positions of trust and honor, always proving himself a worthy man, a good neighbor and a kind friend. To his family he was ever generous and considerate, settling upon each of his children as they left the paternal roof, a goodly moiety of this world’s goods, with his blessing. Being reduced to poverty by the failure of his son, for whom he was a surety, was a crushing blow to the generous old man. He sought consolation in drink, and under its maddening influence he attempted to take his life. He lies in a critical condition, but hopes are entertained of his recovery. Mr. Clark is an uncle by marriage of Gen. Phil Sheridan.
