Millikan The Ideal Scientist
The Los Angeles Times contains the following of interest to many local readers:
“Dr. Robert A. Millikan is the ideal scientist,” said David Edstrom, celebrated sculptor, who introduced Dr. Millikan at the banquet tendered him last night. “Dr. Millikan, who won the Nobel prize, is one of the great American men of science.
“Many scientific men as well as business and professional men are almost nonentities outside of their particular jobs,” said Mr. Edstrom. “They have few if any outside interests and live within themselves. In the case of Dr. Millikan, however, we have a man of the world interested in the affairs of the world, the affairs of his country and of his own state and city. He is a man of family and a first-class citizen in every sense of the word, and I think we are as proud of him for that as we are of his being one of the great scientific men of this generation and of his winning the coveted Nobel prize.”
Both Dr. Millikan and Mr. Edstrom are going to Sweden early this year to lecture, Dr. Millikan at the Nobel Institute and Mr. Edstrom at the National university. Dr. Millikan, unlike many other scientists, holds views that religion and science are inseparable and that one complements the other.
