CUNNINGHAM WAS SPRAGUEVILLE PIONEER

A pioneer of the Spragueville community was William Cunningham, who came to Jackson County in 1835. Born in Lower Canada March 13, 1812, he came to Bellevue when a young man and later journeyed through a wild wilderness to Spragueville where he secured a tract of land. In 1841 he married Laura Ann Sprague, daughter of the founder of that then busy village. The young wife died seven years later, and in 1852 he married Miss Mahala Adams of Pennsylvania. One of their two children is Mrs. Lucius Russell, who passed her83rd birthday on April 2, 1938.
A veteran of the Bellevue War and the Gold Rush of '49, he moved to a farm four miles east of Maquoketa where he lived for 25 years, dying in 1895 at the age of 84 years.
