Mr. JOHN R. ALDEN, our candidate for Treasurer and Recorder, is eminently well qualified to fill the office for which he has been nominated. Being an excellent book keeper, accountant, and a ready pensman, he possesses all the requirements necessary to fill this office with credit to himself and honor to his constituency, should be elected. He is gentlemanly, polite and accommodating in his manners, attentive to his business, and will devote his whole time and attention to the arduous duties of the office. His political tenants have been acquired in the school that recognizes no political oath-bound politicians, but an open and avowed sentiment. A better selection could not have been made.
(Alden lost the election to John Pope, Know Nothing Candidate, on August 6, 1855)

Our candidate for Sheriff, Mr. JOHN FOLEY, is an old resident among yon – was, we believe, the first Sheriff in Joe Davies county, Ill., when that county comprised almost a territory of land – was a member of our legislature in early days from Dubuque county – has been acting as Deputy Sheriff of this county for the last two years past, in which capacity he has discharged his duties faithfully and promptly, is well acquainted with the business of the office, a man of sterling and undeviating integrity – one who is amply qualified to fill the office – a sound Democrat, and deserving the confidence of the Democracy of this county.
(Foley lost the election to Joshua Seamands, Know Nothing Candidate, on August 6, 1855)

RUFUS S. HADLEY, the candidate for County Judge, is as well qualified to fill the office for which he is nominated, as any other man in the county. We assert this from having enjoyed the acquaintance of Mr. HADLEY for over a year past. Being a lawyer of more than ordinary talents, and having had experience in public affairs, we are satisfied he will fill the state with credit to his constituents and honor to himself, should the people of Jackson county elevate him to this responsible post; and we have not the least doubt but that he will be elected, if the voters of this county who are opposed to the wily proscriptive policy of the “opposition,” but give him their united support.
(Hadley lost the election to D. F. Spurr, Know Nothing Candidate, on August 6, 1855)
